An expansion joint, which is also known to some as a movement joint, is an assembly consisting of a separation in concrete as well as a flexible material such as a sealant or bond breaker. They are designed specifically in order to break the bond between building sections to ensure the sections can separate. Laird Landscaping in Katy has a product called Trim-a-slab that creates a nice flexible finish that fills the void of the rotted out wood joint. Ask about it.

Since the Houston area has been prone to heavy rains in recent years, moisture movement is caused by materials expanding and contracting from increases or decreases in moisture content. Some materials will expand when saturated with water and return to their original state after drying out. They act as a dry sponge when they are initially installed. Trey Laird and his team will examine expansion joints in patios, walkways and driveways where the wooden expansions joints deteriorate over time.
